Recipes For Cough and Cold Remedies

This past weekend I taught another Backyard Medicinal Class here at the farm with a great bunch of folks!
We made a few remedies and I figured I would share the recipes with all of you. With cold season coming soon we all have to boost our immunities, eat right and get much needed rest. Here is the first recipe I want to share from a wonderful teacher and herbalist, Patricia Howell.

Garlic and Cayenne Oxymel
8 ounces apple cider vinegar, organic if possible
1 garlic bulb with about 10 cloves of garlic, pressed
1/2 cup fresh sage
a few fresh thyme sprigs or a tablespoon dried(I added this, not sure if it was in original recipe)
3 cayenne peppers, cut up OR 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
10 ounces raw honey

Heat apple cider vinegar and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add all but the honey. Stir and let steep 10-15 minutes.

Strain through cheesecloth or coffee filter into another pot(Squeeze out every last drop). BE CAREFUL when straining, wear rubber gloves because the garlic and hot peppers could irritate your hands when you squeeze it out.

Add honey and reheat just til combines. You don’t want to cook too long because your honey will lose enzymes.

Pour into jars or small bottles, label and store in cool dark place or the refrigerator. Will keep up to a year in fridge. Take 1 tablespoon, can mix it into a cup of hot tea. Use as needed for congestion and colds.
